How UCaaS Can Drive Enterprise Transformation Maturity

One of my work projects was for BT, to launch and drive demand for one of the first UCaaS offerings, based on the Microsoft Lync technology.

A key resource developed by the team was a UC maturity model, quite an under-rated document I always thought.

What the document highlights is that Unified Communications can also be expanded in scope to encompass collaboration, as well as the communications part that includes VoIP, presence status et al.

Collaboration methods could include video and desk sharing, going right through to social communities enabled by apps like Sharepoint, and so offered considerable organizational transformation potential not just upgraded telephony capabilities, described in maturity terms as:

0 – Isolated technology stovepipes that prevents agile people collaboration

1 – A collaboration architecture that enables inter-business unit team work

2 – De-centralized social communities that enable enterprise-wide collaboration

3 – An adaptive, converged workplace of self-organizing process networks

Digital Workplace Maturity
Andy Jankowski explores the same ideas into more detail in this Digital Workplace Maturity Model.

This builds out from the traditional intranet model to encompass an increasing suite of connected apps to enable a maturity journey defined as:

0 – Email is the primary collaboration tool and there is no ‘expertise finding’ directory capability

1 – Some use of basic collaboration tools like shared drives, encouraging “shadow IT” behaviours

2 – Improved collaboration tools like simple social media communities, document sharing and a single address book, but these are still isolated

3 – Comprehensive use of real-time UC collaboration tools, expertise directories via social media, private collaboration groups for every project

4 – Full app integration (single sign-on et al) to enable cross-enterprise collaboration and use of highly advanced tools like telepresence and virtual worlds
